As you may know, the history of Westside Barbell began with powerlifter and strength coach Louie Simmons, who had a strong belief in educating himself about his sport.
Throughout the years, Simmons has dedicated himself to acquiring as much knowledge as he can about strength training. The Conjugate Method is based on very strong scientific research and knowledge on the background of training, and we’ve stuck with it because it was developed by people who were more intelligent than us. This method was created and built upon by teams of scientists who spent their entire life on this work.

The information comes from studies on track and field and Olympic lifting by Russian, Bulgarian, and East German throwers, and the methods they used in their strength training.
A lot of the information was pulled from these studies because these athletes are really not interested in making money off of supplements and other products…
…but rather in gaining results for their nation in the Olympic Games — and they took what they did very seriously.
These researchers focused all of their time, equipment, money, and backing to come up with the absolute most effective ways of training their athletes. Knowing this, we studied the nutrition information from these experts as well, meaning everything we have is consistent, thorough, and effective. There was no guesswork involved here. We’ve used this science-based, time-tested knowledge and incorporated it into our work. We have been evolving this system since 1982.
It’s important that you study hard if you want to do things the right way. You should want to learn and become a dedicated student of your sport. Surround yourself with the right people with the best information, and learn about what was effective in the past and what wasn’t. Look at how the sport or training has evolved, and examine that evolution in order to make it better.
There is potential to come up with your own ideas and take the proven training methods even further…
…but it’s impossible without knowing a bit about the history of where the methods have been and the direction in which they’re moving.
Unfortunately, people are often sold “methods” that have little to do with the evolution of sport, but rather are impressed upon others through social media presence and fads. The bottom line here is that conjugate method uses information that has been proven effective through science.
At Conjugate Fitness, we truly believe that following less-informed, less peer-backed methods is a waste of time and energy that could be spent improving strength and performance. Louie Simmons once said, “Reduplicate before you innovate.” We couldn’t agree more.
